Sofia Rozenfeld, a prominent Russian ornithologist, was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for donating approximately $25 to Alexei Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation. The investigation began in December 2025 after she made two small donations in 2021. Despite being urged by colleagues to leave Russia, Rozenfeld chose to stay and continue her work in Arctic bird conservation. During her trial, she expressed her belief in combating corruption, stating that any help in this fight was valuable. Following her sentencing, her family created a support website and sought assistance from Israeli authorities. Rozenfeld is the third woman in Russia imprisoned for donating to Navalny's organization, which was labeled extremist in 2021. Over 200 criminal cases related to donations to the foundation have been opened by Russian authorities by spring 2026.
