Two significant Christian holidays are celebrated in the Orthodox calendar this week: Saint Demetrius the Myrrh-Gusher on October 26 and Saint Demetrius the New on the following day. The latter is revered as the protector of Bucharest, with his relics housed in the Patriarchal Cathedral. Saint Demetrius the New, known for his humility and kindness, lived a monastic life after leaving his pastoral duties. His relics were discovered through divine intervention and were later brought to Romania during a tumultuous period. The faithful honor him with prayers for health and well-being, and traditions include sharing food with the needy. His feast day is also seen as a herald of winter, marking a time for rest and reflection.
