On October 26 and 27, the Orthodox calendar commemorates two saints named Dumitru: Saint Demetrius the Great Martyr and Saint Demetrius the New. Although their celebrations are consecutive, they lived in different times and have distinct life stories. Saint Demetrius the Great Martyr, celebrated on October 26, was a military commander who died for his faith during Emperor Maximian's persecutions. He was known for his noble lineage and virtuous character. In contrast, Saint Demetrius the New, celebrated on October 27, was a humble shepherd from the 13th century who dedicated his life to prayer and asceticism. His remains were discovered centuries later, leading to numerous miracles. Both saints hold significant places in Orthodox tradition, with the former being the Miracle-Worker and the latter the protector of Bucharest.
