The Old City of Jerusalem, with a history spanning approximately 3,000 years, has been under various dominions. Jaffa Gate, opened by the Ottomans in 1538, was the entry point for British troops in 1917. The Western Wall, a remnant of the Jewish Temple destroyed in 70 AD, is the holiest site for Jews. Above it lies the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque, significant Islamic structures. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, believed to be the crucifixion site of Jesus, has undergone renovations. The Via Dolorosa marks the path Jesus took to his crucifixion. The Old City comprises four quarters: Muslim, Christian, Jewish, and Armenian, with the Jewish Quarter predominantly inhabited by Orthodox Jews after 1967.
