On October 26, 1497, the Battle of Codrii Cosminului marked a significant victory for Stephen the Great against a numerically superior Polish army. Despite having only 22,000-26,000 troops compared to the Polish king's 60,000, Stephen's strategic ambush in the dense forests led to heavy losses for the Polish forces. This battle not only solidified Moldova's position in the region but also showcased Stephen's tactical brilliance. The day is also notable for the birth of scholar Dimitrie Cantemir in 1673, the inauguration of the University of Iași in 1860, and the occurrence of a massive earthquake in 1802.
