Chinese astronomers have discovered a binary system of neutron stars, PSR J1856-0039, which has the lowest mass of any known binary neutron star system. This discovery allows researchers to test Einstein's general relativity under extreme conditions. The system, identified using the FAST radio telescope, consists of a pulsar and another neutron star, both closely orbiting each other. The total mass is about 2.488 solar masses, making it the lightest binary neutron star system recorded. Precise measurements of the pulsar's signals confirm predictions of general relativity, including orbital decay and precession effects. Future observations may further enhance understanding of neutron star formation and the origins of heavy elements in the universe.
