An experiment in Germany indicates that iron under conditions similar to Earth's inner core may adopt an unexpected crystalline structure. This finding could alter theories regarding the evolution of Earth's protective magnetic field. Researchers at the European XFEL compressed a tiny iron sample, initially confirming a hexagonal structure. However, at extreme pressures and temperatures, they detected a body-centered cubic structure. This change could impact estimates of when the inner core solidified, affecting heat transfer and magnetic field generation. While the observation is significant, further experiments are needed to confirm these findings, as previous tests have only shown the hexagonal structure. The presence of nickel and silicon may also influence the final structure.
