Two engineers from Cluj-Napoca have developed an intelligent waste bin named "Nicelium" that uses artificial intelligence to sort waste automatically. The prototype can identify various materials and direct them to the appropriate recycling compartment within 3.5 seconds, utilizing over 20 sensors and a machine learning algorithm. The project has received €1.6 million in funding and was showcased in Paris, where it garnered positive feedback. Although production is set to begin in June 2027, the bin is intended for large spaces like malls and airports rather than home use. This innovative solution aims to simplify recycling and optimize waste management costs.
