Saint Demetrius, celebrated on October 26, is known as the Great Martyr and Miracle-Worker. The following day honors Saint Demetrius the New, protector of Bucharest. Despite sharing a name and being commemorated consecutively, they lived in different times and places. Saint Demetrius, from Thessaloniki, was martyred for his Christian faith in the 3rd century. In contrast, Saint Demetrius the New, from Basarabov, Bulgaria, lived in the 13th century and is revered for his ascetic life. His relics were brought to Bucharest in 1774, establishing his connection to the city. The celebrations on October 26 and 27 highlight their distinct legacies, with specific services planned for each saint.
