The Finnish government has granted Posiva Oy a license for the world's first permanent underground repository for spent nuclear fuel, located in Eurajoki. This facility will encapsulate and permanently store nuclear waste at depths exceeding 400 meters in ancient crystalline rock. The design ensures complete isolation of radioactive materials for over 100,000 years. The project aims to address the long-standing challenge of managing hazardous radioactive waste, transitioning from temporary surface storage to secure underground containment. Following a thorough safety assessment, operations are set to begin, with the facility expected to hold up to 6,500 tons of uranium waste. Finland leads in this initiative, with other countries like Sweden following suit in developing similar deep geological repositories.
