Scientists have discovered a remarkable mushroom species named Dianjunus rex in China's Yunnan province, reaching heights of 50 cm and weights over 2 kg. This species, identified during research in 2024 and 2025, belongs to a family that emerged after the dinosaurs' extinction 65 million years ago. The mushroom's reproductive structures are vertical, fleshy, and pale yellow, resembling giant fingers. Although locals had seen and even tasted it, researchers caution that it hasn't been tested for toxins. The discovery gained scientific attention after a local shared photos of the unusual fungus, leading to its classification as a new species.
