NASA has updated its plans for robotic vehicles and rovers to support the Moon Base initiative, aimed at establishing a lunar base. The Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover (VIPER) is set for a 2027 mission to explore the Moon's South Pole, focusing on permanently shadowed craters to locate water and other resources. VIPER will travel over 30 kilometers, collecting data on lunar conditions. Additionally, NASA has contracted Astrolab and Lunar Outpost to develop lunar terrain vehicles (LTVs) for astronaut transport, expected to arrive before crewed Artemis missions. These vehicles will enable geological exploration and sample collection, enhancing long-term lunar exploration capabilities.
