An international analysis revealed that extreme temperatures in summer 2026 led to approximately 50,400 deaths in European cities, with two-thirds attributed to human-induced climate change. The study, conducted by researchers from Imperial College London and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, covered 854 urban areas across 30 European countries, including Romania. The findings indicate the highest heat-related mortality recorded in the analyzed period, emphasizing the growing impact of extreme temperatures on public health. The elderly were particularly affected, with nearly half of the deaths occurring in those aged 85 and older. The research highlights the urgent need for improved heat warning systems and protective measures for vulnerable populations.
