Two earthquakes measuring 6.9 and 6.3 struck off the coast of Vanuatu, prompting a tsunami alert that was later lifted. The USGS initially reported a magnitude of 7.2 but revised it after confirming the two separate quakes. Both occurred at shallow depths near the archipelago. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned of potential dangerous tsunamis within 300 kilometers of the epicenter, but the alert was subsequently canceled. Vanuatu, located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, frequently experiences seismic activity. A previous quake in December 2024 caused significant damage and fatalities in the capital, Port-Vila.
