Polish manufacturer PESA is developing a passenger train prototype called HEMU, which will utilize three energy sources: overhead lines, hydrogen, and batteries. ABB specialists are integrating its propulsion systems. The train can switch between energy sources, allowing it to operate on partially electrified routes without diesel engines, thus being emission-free. This project marks a significant advancement in hydrogen-based railway technology in Poland, building on previous collaborations between PESA and ABB. The integration of various energy sources requires advanced control systems for efficient operation. PESA also supplies electric trains to Romania and is interested in further contracts.
