In the first nine months of 2026, Romanian police seized around 70 million cigarettes and over 9.8 tons of tobacco, imposing fines totaling 8,175,255 lei. The General Inspectorate of Romanian Police reported conducting 372 inspections and opening 541 criminal cases related to tobacco smuggling. A total of 765 individuals are under investigation. Significant seizures included 280,000 cigarettes and large sums of money in Iași, and 900,000 cigarettes along with fireworks in Galați, with suspects aged 56.
