In the first nine months of 2026, Romanian police seized approximately 70 million cigarettes and 9.8 tons of tobacco in anti-smuggling operations. They imposed over 1,100 fines totaling more than 8 million lei. A total of 372 integrated actions were conducted, resulting in 541 criminal cases and investigations involving 765 individuals. Sixteen criminal groups involved in tobacco smuggling were dismantled, and numerous offenses related to customs and tax evasion were reported.
