Archaeologists have narrowed down the identity of a man buried in a Roman sarcophagus at Westminster Abbey, believed to be an abbot from the 11th century. The sarcophagus, discovered in 1869, features a 11th-century Anglo-Saxon cross and a 4th-century Roman inscription. Analysis of the remains suggests the man died between 987 and 1052, with two potential candidates identified: Alfwig and Wulfnoth. The reuse of the ancient sarcophagus raises questions about burial practices, and further investigation may reveal more about its origins and the individual buried within.
