Scientists have developed an AI-based device that can identify and transmit scents over the internet, moving closer to the dream of smelling online. This automated system, created by researchers from Ohio State University and Zhejiang Lab, uses an electronic nose to detect aromas without manual intervention. The scent data is sent to a device called Scentronic, which can recreate the smell for users. Initial tests with five common scents showed a 73% accuracy in identification among volunteers. The system responds quickly to scent signals, although complex food aromas take longer to classify. Despite promising results, researchers noted limitations in accurately reproducing chemical compositions of scents.
