The Danube has reached historic low water levels, prompting Romania's water authority to increase water flow from the Iezer reservoir to support nuclear energy production. This temporary measure, effective from October 10 to 18, 2026, aims to maintain necessary cooling water levels for the Cernavodă nuclear plant. Current Danube inflows are below 1,200 cubic meters per second, nearing operational limits for cooling water intake. Additional controlled water releases from other reservoirs are also planned to mitigate low water levels in the Cernavodă area. The operation is coordinated based on available flows and hydrological forecasts to ensure efficiency without depleting the Iezer reservoir significantly.
