The Ukrainian currency, hryvnia, has reached a historic low against the US dollar, with an official exchange rate of 45.20 hryvnias per dollar. This marks a 6.7% depreciation since the beginning of the year. The hryvnia has also weakened against the euro, now at 50.5766 hryvnias per euro. Economic pressures from the ongoing war with Russia, rising prices, and high budget expenditures are contributing to this decline. Additionally, the strengthening of the US dollar on international markets and inflation, which rose by 10% in September, are further challenges. The National Bank of Ukraine has intervened by selling dollars to stabilize the currency, but reserves have decreased by 3.2%. The central bank raised the reference interest rate to 16% to combat inflation, but the depreciation of the hryvnia may lead to higher prices for imported goods, impacting both consumers and businesses.
