The EU Civil Protection Mechanism celebrates its 25th anniversary, having responded over 900 times to disasters in 160 countries. This system exemplifies European solidarity, allowing nations to request assistance during crises. Ursula von der Leyen highlighted its role in managing diverse emergencies, from wildfires to health crises. Established in 2001, it includes 27 EU member states and 10 additional countries. The mechanism has provided various forms of aid, including firefighting support and medical supplies during the COVID-19 pandemic. The EU is investing in measures to enhance disaster response, including a permanent firefighting fleet and improved cooperation between civil and military structures.
