Construction has begun for the Regional Oncology Institute in Timișoara, located on the outskirts of the city. The project, which involves demolishing part of an abandoned hospital, is significant due to the high cancer incidence in western Romania. The institute will cover 65,000 square meters and include 250 beds, operating rooms, and facilities for radiation therapy and stem cell transplants. The construction is led by two Romanian companies and is expected to be completed within three years, with funding now sourced from the Health Operational Program instead of the initially planned PNRR. Local officials emphasize the urgent need for such a facility given the rising number of cancer cases in the region.
