Bulgaria has doubled its energy storage capacity in batteries within a year, becoming a key electricity exporter in the region. This growth allows for increased electricity exports, particularly to Romania, during periods of high demand caused by droughts and heatwaves. The country's storage capacity rose from 3 to 6 gigawatts, supported by €700 million in European funding and private investments. Bulgaria's electricity exports surged by 62%, reaching 3.5 terawatt-hours, sufficient to power approximately 1.75 million households annually. However, challenges remain, including the need for network expansion and reliance on conventional power plants during winter months.
