The European Parliament has voted to delay methane emission monitoring obligations in the energy sector by three years, benefiting oil and gas producers. This decision, supported by MEP Virgil Popescu, received 341 votes and extends the delay beyond the European Commission's initial proposal. A review clause was also introduced, requiring the European Commission to report on the implementation readiness by July 2029. The amendments affect importers of oil, natural gas, and coal, pushing deadlines for compliance and reporting to 2031. Popescu emphasized the importance of considering the realities of the industry and the need for a realistic timeline to maintain competitiveness while addressing environmental goals.
