Judges in Romania earn an average net salary of €4,300, while their average pension is €5,000, raising questions about this discrepancy. A recent CEDO ruling allows the Romanian government to pay judges their salary arrears in installments. The decision highlights that judges have already received €600 million in back pay, with an additional €1.8 billion still owed. The average pension for judges exceeds the average salary of other public sector employees, which ranges from €650 to €2,288. Furthermore, judges' salaries surpass those of high-ranking officials, with some judges earning between €5,088 and €5,473. The higher pensions result from a unique calculation where only 25% of the pension is based on contributions, with the state covering the rest.
