Greece has approved a plan to develop an archaeological site on Ithaca Island linked to Odysseus's palace. The project aims to enhance visitor access to the ruins at Agios Athanasios, also known as "Homer's School." The Central Archaeological Council unanimously approved the study for the site, located on the slopes of Mount Exoghi. The plan includes visitor pathways, informational panels, benches, restrooms, and facilities for disabled access. Excavations from 1994 to 2012 revealed a large fortified complex with artifacts from various historical periods. While some researchers associate the site with the palace in "The Odyssey," this identification remains unproven. The approved development aims to facilitate visits while preserving the landscape and existing ruins. No timeline for completion or public opening has been announced, but interest in the ancient epic has surged, partly due to Christopher Nolan's film "The Odyssey."
