Mangalia is set to become a key site for Romania's military shipbuilding, with a contract worth approximately 920 million euros for four naval vessels. The project includes two offshore patrol ships and two support vessels for divers. Currently, only 100 employees are maintaining the facility, but the reopening is expected to create new jobs. Local officials express optimism about the project, emphasizing the need for domestic shipbuilding capabilities. The shipyard previously faced insolvency, leaving over a thousand workers unemployed, and the community is eager for its revival.
