Finland is set to operate the world's first permanent nuclear waste repository, named Onkalo, located in Eurajoki. The construction took 22 years, significantly longer than building a nuclear power plant. The facility will store spent nuclear fuel from Finland's reactors, which remain radioactive for millennia. Before operations begin, necessary tests and inspections will be conducted and approved by the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority. The repository can hold 6,500 tons of uranium, with waste encapsulated in corrosion-resistant copper containers and sealed in rock tunnels.
