After the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, military equipment worth $7.12 billion was left behind, much of which has been seized by the Taliban. This includes around 600,000 weapons, nearly 300 aircraft, and over 80,000 vehicles. The Pentagon estimates that while the total funding for Afghan forces reached approximately $90 billion over two decades, only $18.6 billion was specifically for equipment. The Taliban have begun to reorganize their military using this equipment, transitioning from an insurgent group to a regular army. However, the actual operational status of much of this equipment remains unclear, with many items potentially needing repairs or maintenance. Independent verification of the current state of these assets has become impossible since the Taliban took control, complicating assessments of their military capabilities.
