Valentin Lazea, chief economist of the National Bank of Romania, emphasized the need for a political pact to ensure the correlation between GDP growth, salaries, and pensions over the next four years. He highlighted the importance of improving tax collection to reduce the budget deficit below 3% of GDP by 2030. Lazea pointed out that Romania currently relies heavily on borrowed funds, with a significant portion of state spending financed through loans. He stressed that salary increases should not outpace GDP growth and that pension growth should align with salary increases. Additionally, he called for better tax collection practices to address the substantial revenue losses from uncollected VAT and profit tax, which could significantly reduce the budget deficit. Lazea also advocated for combating tax evasion and reforming the National Agency for Fiscal Administration (ANAF).
