The National Bank of Romania (BNR) responded to Eurostat data showing Romania's budget deficit rose to 9.2% of GDP in Q2 2026, contradicting former Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan's claims. Valentin Lazea, BNR's chief economist, emphasized the need for a political pact to align salaries and pensions with nominal GDP growth over the next four years. He advocated for improved tax collection to reduce the deficit below 3% of GDP by 2030. Lazea highlighted that Romania has the highest budget deficit in the EU, and proposed measures to enhance tax compliance and reform the tax authority. Despite Bolojan's assertions of economic recovery, Romania still faces significant fiscal challenges.
