The European Parliament has voted to delay methane emission obligations by three years, a measure supported by Romanian MEP Virgil Popescu to safeguard oil and gas production. The amendment, adopted with 341 votes, extends the delay beyond the European Commission's initial proposal. It includes a review clause requiring the European Commission to report on the readiness for new regulations by July 2029. This decision impacts oil, gas, and coal importers, who must comply with monitoring and reporting requirements by 2031. Popescu emphasized the importance of considering the realities of the industry and the costs involved, particularly for Romania's aging oil and gas wells. He clarified that the delay does not abandon emission reduction goals but adjusts the timeline for implementation.
