Artificial Intelligence could boost global economic growth, but poorer countries and smaller companies may lag behind without improved access to energy and digital infrastructure, according to IMF and OECD officials. Massive investments in AI infrastructure have driven global growth and stock markets to historic highs, raising concerns about companies' ability to achieve sufficient returns amid rising borrowing costs. The IMF estimates that effective AI adoption could add up to 0.5% to global economic growth annually, while the OECD suggests a potential productivity increase of 0.4% to 1.2% in member countries. However, there is a significant gap between exposure to AI technology and its actual use in businesses, particularly in core functions. Approximately 40% of global jobs may be affected by AI, with young workers being particularly vulnerable as AI takes over tasks traditionally used for gaining professional experience.
