For the first time, the Shamonda virus has been detected in a human in France, resulting in the death of a severely immunocompromised patient. The French government stated that this case is exceptional and poses no risk to the general population. The patient likely contracted the virus from an infected midge in eastern France, where it has circulated among animals. Shamonda, discovered in Nigeria in the 1960s, primarily affects cattle and is transmitted by Culicoides midges. Despite its presence in Europe, no human cases had been reported until now. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities assure that animal products are safe for consumption.
