Valea Saulei, a biodiversity hotspot in Sector 2 of Bucharest, is proposed to become a protected natural area. The project is set for discussion by the General Council next week. Covering 5.2 hectares, it hosts over 80 bird species and various mammals, reptiles, and amphibians, many of which are protected at European and national levels. The initiative aims to preserve aquatic areas, reed vegetation, and natural habitats while providing recreational and educational opportunities. The area has developed naturally over decades and serves as a refuge against urban pressures. However, it faces threats from urban expansion, invasive species, and pollution.
