The European Court of Human Rights ruled that Romania can delay paying judges' salary arrears during severe financial crises. Five judges sought €300,000 in unpaid wages, claiming their rights were violated. The court acknowledged the state's obligation to honor judicial decisions but allowed for staggered payments in exceptional circumstances. It emphasized that judges' involvement in salary decisions could lead to conflicts of interest. Previously, Romania's High Court mandated the government to pay €1 billion in salary arrears, a decision that remains definitive. However, the ECHR did not determine if these arrears should be paid immediately.
