Romania reported the highest budget deficit in the EU for Q2 2026 at 9.2% of GDP, significantly higher than previous quarters. This figure marks an increase from 5.5% in Q1 and 7.7% in Q2 2025. The EU average deficit was 3.5%, indicating Romania's deficit was notably above this benchmark. Despite a cash deficit reduction reported by the Ministry of Finance, Eurostat's data reflects a worsening seasonal balance. Economic stagnation and declining purchasing power have contributed to these financial challenges, with rising insolvencies and a decrease in employment noted. Public investment funds have been exhausted, impacting ongoing projects, while Romania continues to navigate complex financing needs for the year.
