The non-banking financial institutions (IFNs) in Romania have seen a significant increase in consumer loans, reaching 15.6 billion lei by the end of 2025, a 28% rise from the previous year. Most of these loans are for consumption, with a notable difference in non-performing loans compared to corporate loans. The National Authority for Consumer Protection (ANPC) identified legal violations in over half of the IFNs inspected. Upcoming European regulations aim to enhance consumer protection and transparency in credit advertising, effective from November 2026. Consumers are advised to thoroughly check loan terms and costs before signing contracts, especially as digital lending becomes more prevalent.
