Pedro Sánchez and Giorgia Meloni have resolved a three-month conflict between Spain and Italy regarding border controls. Both governments agreed not to extend the temporary border checks that had been in place since August. This decision follows a careful analysis of the situation and aims to enhance information sharing for security within the Schengen area. The crisis began in late July when a significant influx of migrants entered Ceuta, prompting Italy to reinstate border checks, which Spain reciprocated. The latest extension of these controls was set to expire on October 22, leading to a coordinated lifting of restrictions. Political calculations also influenced the resolution, as Meloni aimed to avoid giving Sánchez an advantage in the upcoming Spanish elections.
