Barclays Plc plans to cut 5,000 jobs, about 5% of its workforce, as part of a cost-reduction initiative involving AI. The bank reported lower-than-expected quarterly earnings, with a 19% drop in FICC revenues. CEO CS Venkatakrishnan acknowledged the disappointing performance and emphasized the role of AI in improving efficiency. Approximately 1,000 employees were laid off in the first half of the year, with the remainder to be cut by 2026. The bank aims to structurally reduce costs to enable investment and has already cut costs by £201 million in Q3, targeting an additional £300 million by 2026.
