French health authorities have reported the first human case of the Shamonda virus in a severely immunocompromised patient who died in early October. Previously deemed non-transmissible to humans, the government stated this is an exceptional case with no risk to the general population. The patient likely contracted the virus from an infected midge in eastern France, where it circulated among animals this year. Shamonda, discovered in Nigeria in the 1960s, primarily affects cattle and is transmitted by Culicoides midges. It has spread across several European countries, but no vaccine or treatment exists yet, and authorities assure that animal products are safe for consumers.
