Italy and Spain will not extend the suspension of the Schengen agreement after the migrant crisis in Ceuta. This decision follows a discussion between the interior ministers and is aimed at enhancing information exchange for security. Italy had reintroduced checks for arrivals from Spain due to a surge of migrants, while Spain reciprocated with its own controls. Both countries had been extending these measures biweekly. The European Commissioner stated that the integrity of the Schengen area remains intact, as most migrants returned to Morocco shortly after arrival. The decision affects only air and maritime connections between the two countries, while land border checks with Slovenia have been extended until December 2026.
