An increasing number of Romanians are seeking to renegotiate their loans, with requests rising by 60% in the first nine months of 2026. Data from the Alternative Dispute Resolution Center for Banking (CSALB) shows that 3,394 requests were made, up from 2,121 in the same period last year. While banks have shown a willingness to negotiate, accepting 572 out of 1,950 negotiable requests, non-banking financial institutions (IFNs) have not accepted any. Approximately 85% of requests were eligible for negotiation, and 90% of negotiations led to agreements. The financial benefits from these negotiations reached around 1.2 million euros this year. CSALB also facilitated the amicable resolution of 73 ongoing lawsuits, highlighting the differences in responsiveness between banks and IFNs.
