For the first time in Romania, a passenger train operated commercially with the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 on the Buftea–Brazi section. The event, celebrated by Pro Infrastructură Association, marks a significant milestone after ten years of development. The InterRegio 1655 train, running from Bucharest to Suceava, completed the route with ETCS active, experiencing only a minute delay. This section is the first in Romania equipped with the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), authorized in 2022 after completion in 2016. ETCS enhances safety by continuously monitoring train speed and position, allowing automatic braking if safety limits are exceeded. The system is essential for optimal operation of Alstom Traxx locomotives, which automatically switch to ETCS mode upon detection. Other routes are also set for ETCS upgrades, including Brașov–Sighișoara and Bucharest–Giurgiu.
