The German Army, Bundeswehr, has increased its personnel to approximately 186,700 soldiers, the highest in 13 years. This growth is partly due to seasonal factors and a new military service model aimed at expanding forces to 255,000-270,000 by 2035. In the first seven months of 2026, there were 47,300 applications for military service, a 26% increase from the previous year. The new registration system for potential recruits is already yielding results, although military service remains voluntary for now. The German government is prepared to implement mandatory recruitment if necessary.
