Archaeologists in Alba Iulia discover main gate of the Roman fortress of Apulum

Archaeologists in Alba Iulia have uncovered the Porta praetoria, the main gate of the Roman fortress Apulum, during excavations at the Capistrano Bastion. This discovery follows the identification of the southern gate four decades ago. The Porta praetoria, which connected to the fortress's headquarters, features a massive foundation platform and provides insights into the Roman gate's architecture. Notably, the foundations of this gate were later incorporated into the medieval St George's Gate, confirming historical accounts of its Roman origins. Ongoing research continues to reveal structures from various historical periods, enhancing our understanding of the site's significance.
