A recent study reveals that tall tropical trees in Borneo efficiently transport water to their highest branches, challenging previous beliefs about their vulnerability to drought. Researchers examined 38 trees from five species, discovering that these giants utilize wider water-conducting vessels and modified leaf osmotic potential to counteract gravity. Surprisingly, the tallest trees showed resilience during the El Niño-induced drought, maintaining growth rates similar to shorter trees. This suggests that tall trees are more robust than previously thought, playing a crucial role in carbon storage in tropical forests.
