Nearly 30% of registered vehicles in Romania lack valid RCA insurance, according to the latest data from the Financial Supervisory Authority (ASF). However, ASF clarifies that this statistic does not imply that all these vehicles are on the road without insurance. The Bureau of Insurers of Motor Vehicles in Romania (BAAR) reports that accidents caused by uninsured vehicles are a significant issue, leading to millions in compensation. In the first half of 2026, BAAR paid out 45.7 million lei for damages from accidents involving uninsured drivers. The trend shows a consistent coverage rate of around 70% for RCA insurance among registered vehicles, with significant claims for damages from uninsured drivers in recent years.
