Apple has introduced a new verification system called Apple Reference Image in its iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models. This technology uses digital signatures to certify that an image originates from the phone's sensor. The sensor incorporates a private cryptographic key created during manufacturing, which signs the captured data before the operating system accesses it. The raw data is sent to Apple's Private Cloud Compute for processing, where it is verified against a public key associated with the sensor. The system also employs a neural network to analyze the data for authenticity. After processing, the image receives a new digital signature and a unique identifier, indicating its certified status. However, this feature is currently optional and not available in the EU and China, and it does not solve the broader issue of image authenticity online.
